SECURITY TRAINING SUCCESS WITH HLC

As the academic year draws to a close we sat down with Stephen Matenga – Kapiti Security tutor – to talk about the year that was 2020.

The NZ Certificate in Security Level 4 programme started with a keen bunch of students in February 2020.  They were settling into the course routine nicely, and then before they knew it, seven weeks of lockdown began.  Classrooms were swapped for homes and technology replaced face to face teaching.  Stephen found that by engaging with his students daily with the help of Google Classroom was great to keep them focused and progressing through the course.  Once back in class, there were more adjustments to make, including maintaining physical distance and keeping up with hygiene practices.

It wasn’t long after coming back from lockdown that the class completed their mandatory unit standards.  These units are needed to obtain a COA (Certificate of Approval).  A COA is needed to work in the security industry in New Zealand.  Every learner was assigned a project, and soon learnt the importance of this work in a security context.

Steve says his students have done exceptionally well this year.  Half the class took up the opportunity to take on some work experience.  These roles provided valuable experiences which could lead on to full time employment in the future.

Employment outcomes is an important part of the security course at HLC.  Steve has had one student apply for a security role with the New Zealand Defence Force.  She got in by doing some part time work experience and is now headed to a full time role.

Another learner had an interview with The Department of Corrections.  She was asked to apply for a higher level role as she showed she was over qualified for the role she applied for.

Other employment outcomes have been:  New Zealand Orderly Customer Service in Wellington Hospital, Aviation New Zealand, plus four graduates have started work at security companies in Kapiti and Manawatu.

Steve really enjoys tutoring; he gets a real buzz out of helping get his learners across the threshold with high standards achieved.  He has helped them obtain their Driver’s Licence, improved their numeracy and literacy plus helped them with many projects over the year.

Steve’s passion as a tutor is to help all his learners achieve their goals.  Seeing them overcome many barriers to success has a huge impact on him. Watching them grow over the year right up to their final performance shows him that they have great potential to offer out there in the real world.  Steve sets very high expectations for his students and it obviously pays off.  We wish them every success for their future.

Now is the time to join Steve and HLC for the NZ Certificate in Security Level 4 programme in Kapiti.  Contact us now to book your interview.
