Recently the sad statistics of family violence in New Zealand have been discussed in the media.

Unfortunately, the impacts of this violence affect a number of our students and our entire community.

HLC is happy to partner with the Horowhenua Abuse Liaison Team (HALT) to support the Wahine Toa Women of Courage programme in the Horowhenua.

This programme aims to empower women who have been affected by family violence. We recently donated $5000 to support the next weekend programme early this year.

Under the guidance of the HALT team Wahine Toa seeks:

■ To provide a safe environment for women to challenges themselves physically and mentally

■ To provide an opportunity for women to learn to trust themselves and others

■ To provide opportunities for women to have fun and find their sense of self worth

Wahine Toa is run over a full weekend and participants are encouraged to challenge themselves and push past their own personal boundaries.

The exact nature of activities is kept a secret as this is part of the challenge of learning to trust in the right people.

A maximum of 12 participants are selected and are fully supported by four instructors made up of police, social workers and selected members of the community.

The final event for participants is the pamper day where volunteers from the community give up their time to do hair, makeup and nails for our ladies, they are then taken out to dinner to celebrate.

Our hope is this and the other initiatives developed by the HALT Team will work towards reducing family violence in the Horowhenua.

HLC 2020 opportunities

This year we will continue our Computers in Homes programme in association with the Tertiary Education Commission.

This programme targets households with little or no IT in the home and provides training in engaging with the digital world.

We have developed a structure that familiarises participants in the use of technology and introduces them to safe use of the internet, Microsoft platforms, online banking and online job applications. The 10 week programme is free to participants and includes a new laptop for those completing curriculum.

As a Community Trust HLC will continue to develop programmes that support the Horowhenua such as:

■ ACE Computers in Homes

■ Adult Literacy & Numeracy

■ Workplace Literacy & Numeracy These programmes are free for the learner or the workplace.

Enrolments for our 2020 tertiary programmes are also still open. These programmes have been developed specifically to prepare students for employment in our community:

■ Foundation 1 & 2 — Retail
