Course Information

This programme has become available in response to industry demand for skilled workers in the Horowhenua.

It is an entry level programme that may pathway to apprenticeships in specific trades.

Would you like to work in the construction industry? Get ahead by obtaining the right skills and knowledge you need to succeed.

This course is in response to local demand for skilled workers in the Horowhenua.  With growth projected to continue, now is the time to train to enter the construction workforce.

You’ll enjoy trips to local construction sites and visits from industry experts, and work on a range of exciting projects.

Qualifications

On successful completion of the course students will receive:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Carpentry) Level 3

Programme Outline

This programme will focus on learning practical skills needed in the construction industry

  • Learning will be a combination of in class plus on site practical learning.

  • Learn how to work safely and in accordance with compliance and regulatory requirements in the construction trades sector.

  • Carry out assigned carpentry work in a project environment

  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and customers within the construction industry

  • Perform simple calculations to complete a range of familiar tasks in the construction sector

  • Read and use specifications and drawings to complete simple construction projects

  • Understand and apply specific carpentry terminology and concepts when carrying out carpentry work in a project environment

  • Understand basic building technology, the properties of timber, concrete, steel and composite products, interior and exterior linings and fixings, and apply this knowledge to carpentry projects

  • Use construction and installation processes and techniques while carrying out carpentry projects

  • Carry out assigned carpentry work in a project environment

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be aged 16 or over

NCEA Level 1 or equivalent

  • The Government has announced that Fees Free for the first year of study or training will finish at the end of 2024. A final-year Fees Free policy will replace it, starting from 1 January 2025
    If you are a first-time tertiary learner in 2025, you may be able to get Fees Free for your final year of study or training. If you are eligible, you will need to apply for your entitlement through IRD from 2026 onwards

Where to from here?

Once you’ve graduated you can apply for labourer or apprentice roles in the construction industry. 

With additional training and/or experience you can go on to further roles in the construction industry like carpenter, joiner, plasterer, painter or roofer.
