Aims of the service

The Employment Service in Schools (ESIS) is a pilot programme. The goal of this service is to improve the perception of employment for disabled people, their families and schools, and increase expectations that young people with disabilities including health conditions can and should be entering the labour market. ESIS is for disabled young people including people with health and mental health conditions and people who are neuro-diverse.

The Programme

  • Promotes employment or employment related training as their first and best options when they leave school

  • Develops work confidence through work experience and paid part time work outside school hours

  • Identify employment goals and seek training or employment opportunities that will help achieve those goals

  • Work alongside existing supports

Goals and Outcomes

  • Preparation for employment

  • Employment placements through work experience and out of school jobs

  • Employment support on an ad hoc basis for part time work undertaken outside of school hours

Eligibility criteria

People eligible to participate will:

  • be currently living in New Zealand; and

  • be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident; and

  • be aged between 14 and 21 years old inclusive (on enrolment); and

  • have a disability, health condition and/or mental health condition or be neuro-diverse that is likely to continue for a minimum of six months, and that presents a barrier to employment; and

  • be enrolled in a Secondary School or Kura Kaupapa Māori in New Zealand and be planning to leave school within two years of engaging.

Pathway plans

Individualised Pathway Plans will include:

  • The student’s employment goals and aspirations

  • Strengths, abilities and interests

  • Barriers to employment and any support needed to reduce barriers

  • Any skill development required

  • Opportunities and activities for achieving the goals

  • Key agreed activities that will be undertaken, and time-frames.
